Fremont, Calif.-based Washington Hospital laid off 31 employees Wednesday, but that is just a small slice of the positions the hospital is cutting in a cost-reduction move, according to a report by The Daily Review.

In addition to the layoffs, 196 positions were eliminated through attrition and 17 employees accepted a severance package and retired voluntarily. A total of 244 positions are now empty and will not be filled.

Management and non-management positions were affected, but no nurses were laid off, according to the report.

Nancy Farber, the hospital’s CEO, pointed to healthcare reform, reductions in Medicare reimbursement and the rise of high deductible, high co-pay commercial insurance as reasons for the workforce reduction, according to the report.
