The VA will expand private care options June 6 in a rollout VA Secretary Robert Wilkie expects to be straightforward with just “a few hiccups,” according to Military.com.

Beginning June 6, veterans who live more than a 30-minute drive from a VA facility or who are required to wait more than 20 days to see a VA provider will be eligible to seek private care. Previously the rule was 40 miles or 30 days, according to the report.

About 30 percent of veterans receive care from private providers, and Mr. Wilkie does not expect a huge increase, according to the report.

The new system is backed by decision-support technology that will help VA medical teams and veterans agree and easily schedule appointments inside or outside of the system.
