Utah nurse arrested for refusing to draw blood pushes passage of new clarifying law

The nurse arrested in July at the Salt Lake City-based University of Utah Hospital for refusing police officers’ requests to draw blood from an unconscious patient testified before the Utah Legislature Wednesday advocating for protections for nurses in similar situations, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

Alex Wubbels, RN, voiced her support for H.B. 43, a law that clarifies law enforcement officers must have consent from the patient, a legal warrant or a judicially recognized exception in order to draw blood.

The law passed unanimously in the Utah House last week and is now up for a vote in the state Senate.
