Upstate University Hospital creates geriatrics clinical department

Syracuse, N.Y.-based Upstate University Hospital is creating its own clinical geriatrics department to keep up with population needs, according to WRVO.

Upstate will become one of only a handful of hospitals across the nation with a geriatrics department on the same level as specialties such as surgery and neurology. As the population becomes older, geriatrics services grow more frequently utilized.

Sharon Brangman, MD, will chair the department.

"What you will see is an elevation in the care received by older adults," said Dr. Brangman, according to WRVO. "And that's what we are planning to do over time as we increase the number of people we recruit, to provide the care.  We also want to increase the people who can do the teaching to the next generation of health care workers and increase the people who are doing research, so we know what we are doing is based in evidence."
