UPMC cancer network to change name

UPMC will rename its UPMC CancerCenter network to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.

The name recognizes philanthropists Henry and Elsie Hillman, who the health system's current flagship cancer center —  The Hillman Cancer Center — is named after. The late Mr. and Mrs. Hillman gifted UPMC $10 million to establish The Hillman Cancer Center and supported the Hillman Fellows Program for young cancer researchers.

The global network's more than 50 cancer centers and more than 600 scientists will fall under the umbrella name. UPMC will roll out the name and logo at all locations in the U.S. and abroad by the end of 2017.

"When patients learn they have cancer, many of them want to travel to Pittsburgh to be treated at Hillman Cancer Center," said Stanley Marks, MD, chairman of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. "We want patients to understand that they do not have to leave their communities to access UPMC's most advanced, evidence-based cancer treatments."
