A UMMC official said the layoffs will not affect patient care, but will save the hospital an annual $12 million. The eliminated positions were from the hospital’s clinical departments — educational and research positions weren’t affected.
UMMC does not expect more layoffs in the future and expects eliminated positions to return as the economy improves, according to the report.
