The city council is requiring the health system begin groundbreaking within a year with the goal of opening the first phase of the facility by Feb. 2014. The second phase would begin in within five years after the first phase is completed, according to the report.
In 2004, Southwest and UHS announced plans to build a 325-bed facility in the area. The original efforts were slowed due to neighboring residents and a nurses’ union, according to the report. Since then, the plans were amended to include a 320-bed facility.
