Two physician-owned hospitals within the Indianapolis-based Indiana University Health System will likely seek nonprofit status soon, according to a Desert Sun report.
IU West in Avon is 20 percent physician-owned and IU North in Carmel is 40 percent owned by physicians. The system is currently negotiating to purchase the physicians’ shares, but a deal has not yet been reached. System officials could not give a timeline.
Ron Stiver, senior vice president of IU Health, said the transition is due to provisions in the federal healthcare reform law restricting physician-owned hospitals from expansion.
