Truven names Scripps among top 5 large health systems

San Diego-based Scripps Health has been named among the top five large health systems in the nation by Truven Health Analytics. It is the only California healthcare system on the Truven Top 15 Health Systems list this year.

This year marks the fifth time Scripps has been included on the list. The health system is comprised of five acute care hospital campuses, hospice and home healthcare services, 27 outpatient centers and clinics, and hundreds of affiliated physician offices throughout the region.

"The Truven Top 15 Health Systems recognition is one of the most significant in healthcare because organizations cannot apply for it and Truven uses only objective criteria," says Scripps CEO Chris Van Gorder. "I can't tell you how proud I am of our physicians, nurses and support staff who are all focused every day on delivering high quality and cost efficient care — one patient and one family at a time. We are proud of being one of the top five large health systems for the fifth time and congratulate the other 14 systems for their hard work as well."

The Truven Health Analytics study analyzed data from 337 healthcare systems and identified the top 15 large, medium and small health systems based on systemwide clinical and administrative performance. The five performance domains included in the analysis include inpatient outcomes, process of care, extended outcomes, efficiency and patient experience.

The 15 Top Health Systems study is part of Truven's 100 Top Hospitals program.

The study found that health systems included on the Top 15 list achieved higher survival rates and fewer errors at a lower overall cost of care; had shorter hospital stays and emergency room wait times; lower readmissions; and higher patient satisfaction scores.
