According to Mr. Jenkins, interoperability was the informal theme of the conference. Nearly every vendor showed some form of interoperability message, and the formation of the CommonWell Health Alliance, a new consortium of software vendors, was announced. Mr. Jenkins points out that for true interoperability, however, healthcare technology has to become “invisible.” Just as smartphone users rarely have to think about what device or operating system they are using, healthcare IT has to come to a point where IT fades into the background of user experience.
Other important themes for the conference included Bring Your Own Device, health reform and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Security, wrote Mr. Jenkins. He added that it is now more important than ever to evaluate HIPAA across your entire organization, including software, networking, infrastructure and user devices.
