Three North Carolina Health Systems File CONs in Battle for Hospital Beds

Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health, Raleigh, N.C.-based Rex Healthcare and WakeMed, also based in Raleigh, have all submitted certificate of need applications to add hospital beds in Wake County, according to a News & Observer report.

State regulators have said the county is in need of 101 more hospital beds and will consider the applications until an initial decision is announced in September, according to the report. 

WakeMed proposed to add the 101 beds to its existing facilities in Raleigh (79 beds) and Cary, N.C. (22 beds) at the cost of $57.5 million.

Rex Healthcare proposed a $126.8 million, 50-bed hospital in Holly Springs, N.C.; a $94.6 million, 40-bed hospital at its North Raleigh campus; and a 11-bed addition to its main campus.

Novant proposed a $77.7 million, 50-bed hospital in Holly Springs, according to the report.
