The energetic Charles S. Lauer, former publisher of Modern Healthcare and seasoned communicator on hospital issues, will moderate a panel of three health system CEOs from around the country as they discuss the unintended consequences of the Affordable Care Act. With the law moving into its third year, Ken Hanover, CEO of Northeast Health System in Beverly, Mass., Andrea Price, president and CEO of Toledo, Ohio-based Mercy Northern Region, and Stephen Mansfield, president and CEO of Methodist Health System in Dallas, will discuss some of healthcare reform’s largest repercussions and where they see the industry headed.

AdvocateCare, the accountable care organization formed by Oak Brook, Ill.-based Advocate Health Care and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, is in its second year of operation in 2012. The ACO saw positive results from its first six months, such as a 10 percent decrease in hospital admissions per ACO member. Marty Manning, president of Advocate Physician Partners, will speak from experience on how health systems can develop ACO and alignment strategies in their markets. Mr. Manning’s well-founded expertise in hospital-physician alignment is further enriched by the success of AdvocateCare, which has roughly 375,000 people enrolled.

Valinda Rutledge, the director of the Patient Care Models Group at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation, will share some of the government’s key thoughts on healthcare delivery during the first day of the conference. Before assuming her position with CMS, Ms. Rutledge served as CEO of Gastonia, N.C.-based CaroMont Health, where she championed healthcare innovation. She oversaw the system’s Blue Cross Blue Shield 210-day Bundled Knee program, ACO development and other initiatives to meet the triple aim. Ms. Rutledge can speak to hospital leaders from her personal experience of launching system-wide initiatives paired with valuable insight on national trends she has observed in Washington, D.C.
