OR Resource Nurses Play Important Role in Scheduling, Patient Safety

The operating room resource nurse on the evening shift has an important role in OR efficiency and patient safety, according to a Stanford Nurse report.

The author said communication with the day shift resource nurse, anesthesiologists and physicians is crucial for facilitating effective scheduling, efficient turnover time and continuity of care. She said it is important for the resource nurse to assign staff nurses and surgical technologists to the appropriate ORs. For example, the author said her team tries to match the staff working the longest period of time in the OR with the longest cases.
