Deborah Carey Johnson, hospital president and CEO, said the hospital will try to find new jobs for any displaced employees but has not specified how many employees or what positions will be affected. However, the hospital’s nurses’ union has filed a grievance for unsafe patient conditions and possible violations of the nursing contract. According to the report, a notice sent to members of the Maine State Nurses Association said 14 nurses would be affected by the staff reduction.
EMMC decided to perform most obstetrical and gynecological surgical procedures in the general operating suites instead of the specialized OB/GYN suite, which caused some of the job cuts. Radiology, patient care administration and the hospital’s printing operation will also face reduction in staff.
