Survey: 64% of Americans less likely to reelect representatives who vote for AHCA

Most Americans — 63 percent — believe the House-approved bill to repeal and replace the ACA would have a negative effect on their household, according to a survey from icitizen. Sixty-four percent said they would be less likely to vote to reelect their U.S. Senator or Congress member if he or she votes to enact the American Health Care Act.

The online survey was conducted among 1,290 U.S. adults from June 3-12.

Here are seven more findings from the poll.

  1. Belief that the AHCA would yield negative effects is strongest among women under 50 (indicated by 75 percent of respondents), followed by Independents (70 percent) and racial minorities (68 percent).
  1. Positive belief in the AHCA increases with age and is the strongest among men over 50 (28 percent) and seniors (21 percent).
  1. Opinion of the AHCA is predominantly partisan, though a substantial percentage of Republican respondents indicated they believe the bill would ultimately be negative. A quarter of Republicans believe the AHCA would have a negative effect on their household, as do 85 percent of Democrats. Just 45 percent of Republicans think the AHCA would be positive, a full 19 percent drop from last month's poll from icitizen.
  1. Sixty-two percent of respondents overall believe the Senate should not pass the AHCA, while 7 percent said it should "pass the bill as is," 15 percent said "pass with minor changes," 12 percent said "pass with major changes" and 4 percent "unsure/refuse to answer." More than one-third of Republicans (40 percent) believe the AHCA should "pass with minor changes."
  1. Among those who think the Senate should not pass the AHCA are women (71 percent) and millennials (69 percent).
  1. Citizen groups who are most unlikely to reelect representatives who vote for the AHCA are women (72 percent), millennials (68 percent) and Independents (75 percent).
  1. Sixty percent of Republicans said they are more likely to reelect their representatives if they vote for the AHCA, while 88 percent of Democrats said they would not reelect their representatives if they vote for the AHCA.
