Southcoast Health CEO picked to chair MHA board: 3 things to know

Keith Hovan, president and CEO of Southcoast Health in New Bedford, Mass., has been inaugurated as the 76th chair of the Massachusetts Hospital Association Board of Trustees.

Here are three things to know about Mr. Hovan.

1. He succeeds Peter Holden, president and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital - Plymouth (Mass.).

2. He and MHA President and CEO Lynn Nicholas have emphasized the importance of MHA's members working collaboratively through the association. "As an association, we have worked together on issues of nurse staffing and helping Massachusetts citizens kick the smoking habit with the assistance of trained practitioners. And we face many more issues that require our cooperation — behavioral health, opioids and simplifying the administration of insurance so that it no longer confounds our employees and our patients. In the end, there are many more issues that can serve to unite

rather than divide us," he said in a news release.

3. In addition to Mr. Hovan's role, MHA's board leadership team was also recently announced for 2016-2017.

Other officers are:

  • Chair-elect: Kate E. Walsh; president and CEO, Boston Medical Center
  • Treasurer: Mark A. Keroack, MD; president & CEO, Baystate Health (Springfield)
  • Secretary: Bruce S. Auerbach, MD; president and CEO, Sturdy Memorial Hospital (Attleboro)
