The cuts are part of a proposal by the state’s Department of Health and Human Services to help reduce a $225 million deficit in its budget.
Beginning in July, however, the Medicaid agency will negotiate payment rates with classes of physicians and other providers, according to the report. No further detail on how the rates will be negotiated was provided.
The South Carolina Hospital Association and the South Carolina Medical Association oppose the cuts, saying they will lead to layoffs and fewer providers accepting Medicaid patients.
