Six-Year-Old Report Cites Lax Resident Supervision at Texas Hospital Now Under Investigation

A report performed six years ago by consultants for Parkland Hospital in Dallas urged the facility to reevaluate its medical resident training program and cited “nominal supervision” by UT Southwestern faculty physicians, according to a report by the Dallas Morning News.

The public hospital, which is overseen by Dallas County, has partnered with UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas for many years to provide resident training opportunities. Both facilities are currently under federal investigation for possibly fraudulent billing practices to government payors due to billing Medicare for services performed by faculty physicians when they were in fact performed by unsupervised residents.

After the report was shared with Parkland, the hospital hired staff physicians to supplement the UT faculty and created the position of chief medical officer. However, recent lawsuits have alleged that the hospital’s supervision and billing practices remained unchanged.
