Shuttering of Florida nursing home where 12 died affects 245 workers

Hollywood, Fla.-based Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills said 245 employees lost their jobs when the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration suspended the nursing home's license, according to a Miami Herald report.

The layoffs occurred Sept. 20, the same day the state revoked the nursing home's license.

The 245 affected employees include 79 certified nursing assistants, 37 licensed practical nurses, 23 occupational or physical therapists, 18 registered nurses, 25 environmental or laundry workers, 10 administrative assistants and five physicians, among others, the Sun Sentinel reported.

The facility's notification of the layoffs to the state was dated Sept. 27. The nursing home indicated it could not send notification earlier, as required by law, "due to unforeseen business circumstances that occurred after the impact of Hurricane Irma," according to the Sun Sentinel.

The facility evacuated a number of residents Sept. 13, and eight residents died that day. Four other residents have died since. In response, Republican Florida Gov. Rick Scott has penned an emergency order regarding nursing home operations following the deaths at Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills. He called on nursing homes to implement the emergency order by next month, but timeline feasibility has been questioned by the Florida Health Care Association, according to the Sun Sentinel.
