The National Union of Healthcare Workers, which represents more than 600 service workers at the hospital, rejected the SVMH’s “last, best and final offer” for a contract agreement, according to the report. The union said it plans to stage a one-day strike at SVMH on Oct. 18, and it already led a one-day strike on June 21.
SVMH officials said the union is demanding a wage increase at a time when it cannot offer such wage increases, but the union said the hospital has been able to afford millions of dollars on consultants and executive benefits, according to the report.
The hospital plans to hire temporary workers to a three-day contract on the day of the strike, meaning the unionized service workers will be locked out for an additional two days.
