RWJUH Hamilton to end maternity services, plans layoffs

Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, in Hamilton Township, N.J., plans to lay off up to 87 workers and transition the focus of its obstetrics and gynecology program, according to a Times of Trenton report.

RWJUH Hamilton filed a notice with the state Department of Labor that it will lay off 87 employees by Dec. 31. The affected employees will receive help and possible placement in other positions at the hospital or others in the Robert Wood Johnson Health System, according to the report.

The hospital is also switching focuses of its obstetrics and gynecology services, as "there are fewer women of childbearing age who are giving birth to fewer and fewer babies" in the marketplace, Diane Grillo, a vice president at the hospital, told the Times of Trenton. So, though the practice is not closing, it will stop offering maternity services and instead focus on gynecology and women's health.
