Democrats have long sought to pass gun control bills, and holding a majority in the House they are better positioned to promote this legislation than they have been in years. However, Republicans still control the Senate, and Democratic leaders are hoping a focus on public health will be the most frictionless way to tackle the controversial issue.
“We have an opportunity to pass background checks for every firearm purchase,” said Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif. “We have an opportunity to finally study gun violence in America to see what we can do.”
