This will be the second round of layoffs in 18 months, as the 2,000-employee system eliminated 19 positions last April. This round is expected to save $5.8 million in 2012.
George Zara, president and CEO of two-hospital Providence, said the layoffs are due to a shift from inpatient to outpatient care, reduced reimbursement and more uninsured patients due to high unemployment rates.
