The S.E.I.U., one of the largest and most politically influential unions, has about two million members, half of which are females. The group includes many of the minority demographic groups Ms. Clinton needs to capture the Democratic nomination, according to the report. With more Hispanics joining the S.E.I.U. in recent years, the group has increased attention and activism regarding immigration.
The employee union has also been a leader in the push for higher wages and broader social justice movements. Mary Kay Henry, president of S.E.I.U., said the group’s members “believe [Ms. Clinton] is going to fight like hell for our agenda,” according to the report. Ms. Clinton has already met with S.E.I.U. workers twice this year.
Ms. Henry said Ms. Clinton supports higher wages, an immigration overhaul, reinforcing voting rights and addressing mass incarceration, according to the report. Ms. Clinton also said she would use her executive authority to enhance union protections, Ms. Henry told NYT.
“She knows that workers being able to join together and collectively bargain is essential to building an economy that works for everybody,” Ms. Henry told NYT.
Ms. Clinton has already been backed by the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers, both of which represent teachers, as well as the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, according to the report.
