While the top Senate Democrat did not offer details of how the party might respond under different decision scenarios, he did suggest it would be prudent for colleagues to respond as quickly as possible “so that the American people know we have something that if [the Justices] remove [the PPACA], we could take care of whatever the Supreme Court did,” according to the report.
Another top Democratic Senator, Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), said he wouldn’t entertain questions on the healthcare law until the court ruled, and former presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass) said he was confident the court would uphold the entire law, according to the report.
Given the closely divided Senate, and that it’s an election year, it would be quite the challenge for Senate Democrats to push through new healthcare reform legislation if the Supreme Court overturns the PPACA.
The Supreme Court should make a decision on the healthcare law Thursday morning, shortly after 10 a.m. EST.
