The cuts come as the health system consolidates services at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh with West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield, Pa. Allegheny General will provide oncology, neurological, critical care, orthopedics and cardiovascular services. West Penn will continue to provide labor and delivery services, inpatient rehabilitation, bariatric surgery and maintain a burn unit. All other medical/surgical services at West Penn will move to Allegheny General, including all emergency services, according to the report.
West Penn has been operating at only 47 percent of its capacity and experienced a $11.6 million loss for the nine-month period ending March 31, according to the report.
The consolidation is expected to be complete by April 2011.
