Penn Highlands Healthcare plans layoffs

DuBois, Pa.-based Penn Highlands Healthcare has announced workforce changes at its Brookville and DuBois campuses.

In Brookville, jobs for 15 employees will be eliminated, and hours will be reduced for nine other employees. In DuBois, jobs for 33 employees will be eliminated and hours will be reduced for 13 other employees. Additionally, 11 positions in Brookville and 90 positions in DuBois that are or soon will become vacant due to previous resignations or scheduled retirements will not be filled.

Penn Highlands said these workforce adjustments in Brookville and DuBois will involve full- and part-time clinical, support and management positions and are designed "to bring staffing levels into alignment with reduced patient volumes and national staffing trends."

The changes mark the last phase in Penn Highlands' system-wide restructuring process. It has already completed layoffs at its Clearfield and St. Marys campuses.

"Penn Highlands Healthcare has been forced to make tough decisions at all of its facilities in an attempt to combat reductions in reimbursements and declining volumes in many areas," Penn Highlands CEO Raymond A. Graeca said in a statement. “With this phase of our restructuring completed, we can now begin implementing our strategic plan which we believe will strengthen our system, build upon our foundation of quality care and bring unprecedented access to primary care and specialty providers to the residents of our eight-county region.”

In the coming months, Penn Highlands plans to launch several initiatives, including developing a quality improvement committee and a system-wide performance improvement plan, recruiting additional physicians and advanced practice providers, and adding six new primary care clinics/QCare urgent care centers, according to a news release.
