Sister Monica Heeran, BSN, RN, who served as president of Vancouver, Wash.-based PeaceHealth from 1988 to 1997, died Oct. 9 at age 95.
Ms. Heeran died at St. Mary on the Lake in Bellevue, Wash., according to an Oct. 16 news release from PeaceHealth.
She served as administrator of Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, Ore., from 1973 to 1988, working to grow the hospital into a multispecialty regional medical center. During her tenure, she established the Sacred Heart Prenatal Clinic for low-income pregnant women, helped found Lane County Psychiatric Hospital and supported the development of Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence, Ore.
As PeaceHealth president, Ms. Heeran guided the system’s transition in 1994 to become the first Pontifical Private Juridic Person, a structure that allowed it to remain Catholic while transitioning from religious to lay leadership.
After retiring in 1999, she raised funds and founded the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic of Lane County, which serves low-income and underserved adults. She also served as the clinic’s first executive director and chair of the clinical board.
Today, PeaceHealth operates more than 160 clinics and nine medical centers.
