Thousands of nurses, technicians, housekeepers and other support staff at six HCA hospitals in South Florida, who are represented by the Service Employees International Union, authorized a strike if the two groups cannot agree to a new contract. The two groups are at odds of wages, according to a Salina Journal report.
The affected South Florida HCA hospitals include Northwest Medical Center in Margate; University Hospital and Medical Center in Tamarac; Columbia Hospital in West Palm Beach; Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee; Aventura (Fla.) Hospital and Medical Center; and Kendall (Fla.) Regional Medical Center. Workers at Plantation (Fla.) General Hospital and Westside Regional Medical Center in Plantation, both in South Florida, are scheduled to vote on a strike next week.
Workers at HCA hospitals in Eastern Florida, including those at St. Lucie (Fla.) Medical Center, have also threatened to strike. These workers, also represented by the SEIU, are entering into a second round of contract negotiations and are opposed to proposed salary caps and wage increases, according to a Treasure Coast Palm report.
