The 1,600 nurses are represented by National Nurses United. A representative from the union said the key reason for the strike is to address nurse understaffing at the hospital, according to the report.
The union filed a complaint on Nov. 1 with D.C.’s health department asking it to investigate nurse-to-patient ratios that allegedly put patients at risk. A representative for the hospital called the understaffing allegations “untrue” and “unfair,” according to the report.
If the strike occurs, the hospital representative said temporary nurses will be brought in and care will continue without reducing services.
