In the last three weeks, nurses at Largo (Fla.) Medical Center, Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla., Community Hospital in New Port Richey, Fla., Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, Fla., and Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee, Fla., have also voted to join NNU affiliate National Nurses Organizing Committee-Florida.
The decision to unionize could drive up nurse wages, and therefore total healthcare costs, in the area, since non-unionized hospitals will likely increase wages to compete with union pay, according to those critical of the votes.
