DHEC approved Trident’s certificate of need in June, which is followed by a 120-day comment period. Roper St. Francis submitted a letter to the Department of Health and Environmental Control asking the agency to deny the certificate of need for expanding Summerville Medical Center, which is part of Trident Health System, because Trident did not demonstrate a need for an expansion.
Roper St. Francis has also asked DHEC to stop Trident’s expansion plans until a separate conflict regarding new hospital construction by both entities is resolved. According to the news report, Roper St. Francis and Trident are both looking to build new hospitals in Berkeley County. Trident filed a lawsuit seeking to stop Roper St. Francis from building a new facility in Berkeley County, arguing the location cannot support two hospitals. Roper St. Francis has refuted those claims, according to a news release emailed to Becker’s Hospital Review.
The department will hear Trident’s defense of its expansion plans next month, according to the news report.
