The addition of the patient tower makes Phoenix Children’s the largest freestanding children’s hospital in the Southwest. Following a brief opening ceremony, hospital staff began to transition pediatric patients from St. Joseph’s to Phoenix Children’s.
The tower features pediatric radiology technology, a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a separate Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit to support the hospital’s Children’s Heart Center. Three floors remain as “shelled space,” ready for future expansion.
Earlier this year, St. Joseph’s parent company Catholic Healthcare West and Phoenix Children’s signed a definitive agreement transferring all of CHW’s pediatric services in Arizona’s Maricopa County to Phoenix Children’s. Additionally, 28 St. Joseph’s pediatric specialists and approximately 300 additional staff became employees of Phoenix Children’s.
