Negotiations are expected to continue later this week for United Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and the union representing many workers there, representatives from 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East told the Washington Business Journal.

The Washington Business Journal cites a letter to United Medical Center’s board members, in which union members said, “We have indicated willingness to continue discussing wage proposals but we feel further cutbacks are unacceptable to our membership.”

Among other things, the union is coming out against “a proposed cut of the labor and management training fund that provides money toward tuition reimbursement and replace it with a management-designed program,” the report, which sources SEIU 1199 spokeswoman Rae Rawls, reads.

Interim hospital CEO David Small did not provide comments to the Washington Business Journal, according to the report, “other than to say the hospital’s bargaining position is consistent with overall direction contained within the hospital’s adopted plan, which ‘has been fully endorsed by Mayor (Vincent C.) Gray and the Council.'”

Earlier this year, SEIU 1199 protested potential cuts to pay and paid time off, according to the report.

“UMC called the union’s claims ‘misleading’ and ‘inaccurate,'” the report reads. According to the report, a statement from UMC indicated that hospital executives continue negotiations and have made salary offers that mirror trends within the healthcare industry.
