Mohawk Valley Health System to cut 48 positions amid service changes: 8 things to know

Mohawk Valley Health System in New Hartford, N.Y., is cutting 48 positions and making service changes at two healthcare organizations.

Here are eight things to know about the service changes and the layoffs.

1. St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare, both in Utica, N.Y., will be affected by the changes. 

2. The service changes include consolidating FSLH telecommunications with the service response center, and relocating all FSLH cardiac catheterizations and angioplasty procedures to SEMC. Additionally, SEMC and FSLH central scheduling will be consolidated to the Faxton Campus, and 3B, a 15-bed medical/surgical nursing unit at SEMC, will close.

3. The service changes will take place on various dates throughout June, according to Mohawk Valley president and CEO Scott H. Perra.

4. The service changes come as Mohawk Valley has experienced financial loss. Year to date through April, the system has experienced a $1.7 million loss.

5. Due to the the service changes, 48 positions will be cut.  

6. SEMC will lay off 35 employees and FSLH will lay off 13, a hospital spokeswoman told the Central New York Business Journal.

7. The staffing changes involve both union and non-union employees, Mr. Howard said.

8. The employees impacted by the service changes have the opportunity to apply for other positions within MountainValley.
