The 18-month contract extension includes a two percent salary increase but does not resolve issues the nurses had over staffing levels at the hospitals by setting mandatory staffing levels. However, it does include a provision that the hospital will not increase the nurse-to-patient staffing level during the 18 months. The hospital had sought to increase the levels in order to cut costs, but the nurses objected.
The nurses, represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association, are scheduled to ratify the agreement on May 19.
