Michelle Obama: To be a good leader, 'live your values everyday'

Former first lady Michelle Obama made a surprise guest appearance during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference this week to discuss what it means to be good a leader, according to Inc.

Ms. Obama joined Apple Vice President of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives Lisa Jackson onstage June 7 for an hour-long "fireside chat." According to unauthorized video recordings of the presentation, Ms. Obama outlined five characteristics good leaders possess. One of them, she noted, was to live and surround yourself with people who share your values and who motivate you to be the best person you can be.

"You have to surround yourself with people who reflect your values. But then you have to know what those values are and be honest with yourself about whether you're living those values. Sometimes we don't. Sometimes we talk a good game, but what we show to the world is something different. You have to be that person even when no one's looking. That's something I tell my kids all the time. I don't really care who you are in front of me. The question is, who are you when you know that I'm not paying attention? What kind of person are you in the world? And I think that's something we all have to keep in mind, particularly in these times."
