The ED expansion, which is expected to be completed in fall 2012, will increase annual patient capacity to 100,000. The hospital’s current ED is designed for 50,000 patients but in 2010 saw more than 67,000 patients. The construction project will also create the Bristol-Myers Squibb Pediatric Emergency Care Center at St. Mary Medical Center, supported with $2 million by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation.
The updated ED will be designed to accommodate the Split-Flow Model for high patient volume, in which patients are first seen by a nurse for an evaluation and then directed to either pediatric services, prompt care, urgent care or a rapid assessment unit depending on the severity of their condition. This model allows for parallel processing of triage and registration and effective use of resources.
In addition to the ED construction, St. Mary is spending $70 million on a larger project that includes expansion of the surgery department, inpatient facilities, a new intensive care unit and neurosciences capabilities and other renovations. The St. Mary Medical Center Foundation is supporting this project through an $8 million campaign.
