With increased patient volume due to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, hospital pharmacies will see a greater demand and should implement strategies to manage medication supplies. The following points where shared in the IMA report:
• Hospitals should continuously review purchases and dispensing practices.
• A Clinical Pharmacist Program should be established to provide decentralized pharmacy services.
• Guidelines should be developed to contain medication costs, and staff should be educated on cost comparisons of similar medications.
