‘Medicare for All’ protests flank AMA annual meeting

Clinicians and students gathered outside the Hyatt Regency hotel in Chicago June 8, on the first day of the American Medical Association’s annual meeting, to protest the group’s stance on “Medicare for All,” according to Crain’s Chicago Business.

The AMA opposes Medicare for All and a single-payer healthcare system. “AMA policy says patients and physicians should have a range of public and private coverage options and benefit from freedom of choice and competition, which can be achieved by building on our current system, with the goal of providing coverage to all Americans,” AMA President Barbara L. McAneny, MD, said in a statement obtained by Crain’s.

Protesters want the AMA to change its position on Medicare for All and to exit the Partnership for America’s Health Care Future, an industry group against single-payer legislation, according to the report.

Groups present at the rally included National Nurses United and Physicians for a National Health Program.
