According to the news report, the federal government ruled NARM and the next closest hospital was not at least 25 miles apart, per federal regulation, and therefore was not qualified for CAH status. However, NARH President and CEO William Frado confirmed the hospital will most likely become a “stand-alone viable hospital” even without the CAH designation, according to the news report. Hospital officials plan to submit a plan for reorganization to the bankruptcy court in August.
The hospital’s parent company Northern Berkshire Healthcare filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June, with current debt sitting at $49.5 million.
