Massachusetts hospital cuts jobs

Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., part of Hartford, Conn.-based Trinity Health Of New England, has laid off an undisclosed number of employees, according to The Republican.

The layoffs will primarily affect administrative and support services positions, hospital officials told the publication.

Mercy Medical spokesperson Mary Orr said eliminating the jobs will help the hospital "continue to focus our resources on the delivery of the best care and the best care experience for our patients."

This is the latest round of layoffs at Mercy Medical over the last year. In October, the hospital revealed to staff plans to eliminate jobs and end some services — which included closing its hearing center.

The hospital also reduced staff last summer at Holyoke, Mass.-based Providence Behavioral Health Hospital, The Republican reports.

Trinity Health Of New England's parent company, Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health, in February announced immediate and long-term plans to restructure operations, which would affect at least 1,650 employees across its 94 hospitals and care sites.
