The hospitals’ chief nursing officer said the daily inpatient count so far this year has jumped from approximately 50 to 70 patients. The hospital is using a command system designated for emergencies that accelerates hiring so nurses can begin work sooner, according to the report.
By the end of Oct. 2010, University Hospitals expects it will have hired 142 nurses since July 1. Last year, during the same period, the hospital hired 19 nurses. In fiscal 2010, it hired 116 nurses total.
