Secretary Van Mitchell will exit his post at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to pursue private sector opportunities, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) announced.

Mr. Mitchell served as secretary of the DHMH for two years. He will be replaced with Dennis Schrader, who served as secretary of appointments and deputy secretary of transportation for Gov. Hogan’s administration.

The DHMH has been examined this year in light of state mental health facilities not having enough beds, according to The Baltimore Sun. A spokesperson with Gov. Hogan’s office said Mr. Mitchell’s departure did not have to do with the department’s problems.
