“You have to change your people,” wrote Mr. Jarrard. “They must make the hugely important mental shift that will allows them to accept change and evolve what they do and how they do it.”
In order to foster change, hospital employees need to believe three things:
1. The current situation is untenable. Protecting the status quo is only a disservice to patients.
2. There is a future that allows employees to service and fulfill their passion, even if that future looks different.
3. Leadership is creating a path to get hospital employees and the organization from challenges today to tomorrow’s changed environment.
“Notice that this series of arguments has the structure of a good story,” noted Mr. Jarrard, meaning the change involves conflict, tension, action and resolution.
