Low-income patients more likely to seek care in Medicaid expansion states

In states that expanded Medicaid under the ACA, low-income people were less likely to avoid necessary medical care than those people who live in states that did not expand Medicaid, according to a study from the Government Accountability Office.

The GAO study analyzed the 2016 National Health Interview Survey, which found that 9 percent of low-income adults in Medicaid expansion states reported financial barriers to necessary medical care, compared to 20 percent in non-expansion states.

Twenty-six percent of low-income adults in Medicaid expansion states reported having unmet medical needs, compared to 40 percent in states that did not expand Medicaid coverage.
