The hospital is a replacement for the former Charity Hospital, which was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
The hospital is expected to be the flagship facility of the city’s planned Bio Medical District.
The state has committed $700 million toward the project, but further funding still has to be obtained and a construction start date has not been set, drawing criticism from some who worry the hospital faces a number of challenges.
