The hospital investigated whether the EHRs of 13 college football players were indeed inappropriately breached. The athletes were admitted to the hospital with a rare muscle disorder called rhabdomyolysis, which causes muscle fibers to go into the bloodstream and can cause kidney damage, according to the news report.
The hospital would not disclose the identities of the three employees who will be fired or whether the patients’ information was inappropriately disseminated. Two other employees will be suspended as well. Although simple curiosity may have been the reason for the data breach, an official motive could not be ascertained, according to the report.
