Alan Aviles, president of the 11-hospital Health and Hospitals Corporation, told The New York Times in March he expected to reduce the hospitals’ work force by 2,600 over the next fiscal year, in addition to cutting 1,300 before June 2010.
New York State cut more than $240 million in annual Medicaid payments to the city’s public hospital system during the last three fiscal years, according to a Wall Street Journal report. Gov. David Paterson’s budget for the fiscal year that began July 1, 2010, seeks to cut more than $1 billion in healthcare subsidies statewide, one-quarter of which would be taken from hospitals.
Harlem Hospital will fire 42 members, 13 of them physicians, by year’s end, as part of the HHC plan to reduce spending, a move that worries hospital staff, according to an Uptowner report. Brookdale University Hospital in Brooklyn made its second round of job cuts in two years in early November, eliminating 40 positions. The hospital laid off another 200 workers in March.
