Jeff Bezos passes Warren Buffett on Forbes' list of richest in US

Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, has supplanted Berkshire Hathaway's Warren Buffett as the second-richest American, according to The 2016 Forbes 400 list of the wealthy.

Mr. Bezos, who added $20 billion to his fortune in the last year, was the biggest gainer on the list for the second consecutive year, according to the report. Amazon stock was up 46 percent at the time of the list's publication. Mr. Bezos took the No. 2 spot from Mr. Buffett, now No. 3, who was the nation's second-richest for 15 years.

Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, is the No. 1 wealthiest.

The top 20 people on The 2016 Forbes 400 have a combined net worth of $813.5 billion, equaling one-third of the total wealth of all 400 members of the list, according to Forbes. About one-third of the overall list lost money in the past year, while every member of the top 20 got richer.
